For centuries more than 250,000 people annually walk the Camino Santiago (St. James’ Way) through France and Spain. For nearly two centuries California’s El Camino Real (The King’s Road) has afforded travelers to connect from San Diego to San Francisco and beyond.
Like the Camino Santiago, California has its own pilgrimage or walk: Pómniv, American-Indian for "his or her past tracks". Pómniv is an 800 mile-long route from Sonoma to San Diego stopping at all 21 Missions and other key attractions in the state.
A pilgrimage is normally associated with a religious expedition and many who walk the Camino Santiago also do so for exercise or meditation. Ilia Carson-Letelier, California’s Pómniv route ambassador, hopes that people throughout the world will walk the Pómniv for whatever reason they choose!
With over 400 orange arrows now marking the direction walkers should take no maps are needed: just follow the Pómniv yellow arrows to the California Missions and other destination locales.
For further information and detailed maps visit the Pómniv website: www.Pómniv.org or contact Ilia Carson-Letelier at pomnivproject@gmail.com
